I heard a version of this quote the other day, and it really made me think. What would happen if we focused on doing what makes us HOLY instead of what makes us HAPPY? And what exactly does that mean?
My various internet feeds have become full of people promoting self-love. Everywhere I turn, there’s a new meme or video with messages like: “Do what makes you happy,” or “Don’t cross an ocean for someone who wouldn’t cross a puddle for you.” I am seeing “motivational speakers” share this same message. Don’t get me wrong! I am all about the importance of being happy and having good self-esteem. But I see it being twisted into a completely selfish message. People grab on to it as an excuse to make life all about them.
Instead of focusing on being happy, let’s focus on being holy. Then it automatically goes from centering on yourself to centering on others, because charity is the pure love of Christ. To be holy is to serve others.
So do cross that ocean. Love others. Love them unconditionally, no strings attached. . Life should be about loving and serving others, which in turn, will make you happy. For, charity never faileth.
Love and life isn’t about what you gain, it’s about what you give.
