At the heart of what many women are searching for in the world today is a need to know their identity, understand their roles, and discover their purpose in life. More women are feeling a pull every day to do more and be more in the world, especially online. It’s not surprising because it’s been foretold. Have you felt it?
M. Russell Ballard said, “We need more of the distinctive, influential voices and faith of women. We need them to learn the doctrine and to understand what we believe so that they can bear their testimonies about the truth of all things.”
You are witnessing a prophecy. You are living it! But first you need to know the important differences between your identity, roles, and purpose, and what they have to do with your call to do more.
Identity
Knowing who you are gives you peace and courage to accomplish the things the Lord has asked you to do. Your identity determines in large measure your destiny. President Packer said, “You are a child of God. He is the father of your spirit. Spiritually you are of noble birth, the offspring of the King of Heaven. Fix that truth in your mind and hold to it. However many generations in your mortal ancestry, no matter what race or people you represent, the pedigree of your spirit can be written on a single line. You are a child of God!”
You are a daughter of Heavenly Parents. And you have infinite worth. And no matter what you do or what choices you make, that will never change.
Role
Unlike your identity, your roles can and will change throughout your life. You have a role in your family, in your community, in the church, and in the gospel. Some of these roles might include being a daughter, wife, mother, friend, sister, neighbor, primary teacher, etc.
It’s important to understand that you can use each one of your different roles to bless the lives around you and influence the world. You have power and authority from God to do it! Leah Widtsoe said, “The women inside the church or out who feel that they must have more than their womanhood demands are but shortsighted and do not recognize the full scope of their God given powers.”
Don’t underestimate the power you have to influence the world by being a righteous wife, mother, teacher, or friend.
Purpose
One central mission we are each given is to come unto Christ and to help others do the same. But how we do it is our unique purpose. The prophets and apostles have been foreordained to lead the church and bring others closer to Christ. Likewise, each of us has a unique voice and spiritual gifts we can use to help.
It is important that we don’t get caught in the trap of comparison when we consider our own purpose and mission in this life. Everyone’s mission and purpose are significant, including the opportunity to lead a human soul—even our own—to Jesus Christ.
Your purpose (and mine) is to gather Israel and build the kingdom of God. And Heavenly Father wants you to learn what your spiritual gifts are so you can influence the world for good.
