Why It’s Time to Speak Out

speak out

A few weeks ago, I published an articled called 3 Things Women Are Being Called to Do. One of those three things is to Speak Out. I wrote a simple paragraph with my thoughts on why it’s important to speak out, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this topic needed more attention.

People turn to the internet and influencers for answers to every question. Even though I believe everyone should seek personal revelation and “study out of the best books” (D&C 88:118), people will still seek answers online. It’s just how it is. That’s why the internet needs more righteous influencers to be a voice of truth and light. Let’s be louder than the world. It’s time to speak out!

Before you start speaking out, however, I believe there are two very important things to remember. First, always speak out with the purpose to share truth. And second, be articulate.

Speak Out to Share Truth

Make sure that you’re sharing doctrine found with reliable sources – scripture, prophets and apostles, Church magazines, the gospel library – just to name a few. There is so much out there already that sounds true, but is mingled with just enough lies or half-truths that it seems harmless.

Good content does exist, but it can be very difficult to find and often does not address key questions in consistent and engaging ways. That’s why it’s vital that we create and promote online content that effectively communicates what the Church believes in clear, authentic, and engaging ways.

Be Articulate

In 1979 Spencer W. Kimball said “Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world … will be drawn to the Church in large numbers. This will happen to the degree that the women of the Church reflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives and to the degree that the women of the Church are seen as distinct and different—in happy ways—from the women of the world.”

Those words have been quoted a thousand times (probably by me alone) recently. There’s so much to study in just those two sentences. But I want to focus on one part for now, and that is the call to be articulate.

Sharon Eubank said, “Use your voice and your power to articulate what you know and feel—on social media, in quiet conversations with your friends, when you’re chatting with your grandchildren. Tell them why you believe, what it feels like, if you ever doubted, how you got through it, and what Jesus Christ means to you.”

We must be a voice for truth. We must have the faith and courage to speak up, speak out, and engage in social media in a positive, responsible, non-contentious, and effective ways. We can simply share what we know and believe with others.

I believe this is so important, especially right now, so I decided to create a FREE 5-day challenge to help you (and me) to speak out! Join the #SpeakOutChallenge for daily emails with simple and practical ways to speak out and light the world! To join and see more of what it’s about, click here!
