A few nights ago, around 8:00 pm, I received a text asking me to substitute seminary the next day. Being a seminary substitute means last-minute calls. I knew this before I ever agreed to do it. That’s why I love keeping a “last-minute lesson” up my sleeve (or rather, on my desktop).
However, these particular classes that I would be teaching had just gotten my “last-minute lesson” a week and a half earlier. I had also been meaning to come up with more “last minute lessons” to have on hand. I guess now was a great time to prepare another one to have on hand. And luckily, the kids loved it and the Spirit was definitely present.
Instead of sharing the PowerPoint file with you (it’s too big to share), I will just explain the outline of the lesson. It’s super easy to put together your own PowerPoint, or just make it your own.
Hear Him
First, I briefly recounted the plea from President Nelson for us to increase our spiritual capacity so we can Hear Him better.
I also asked why it’s so important for each of us today to learn how to Hear Him. We discussed that for a few minutes. Then, I showed this video from President Nelson.
How the Spirit Communicates
Next, I did a short little activity where I first asked students: What are some different ways the Spirit communicates?
I listed all of them on the board. You can also add some if they have trouble coming up with answers. Some ideas are: Prayer, Scriptures, Thoughts, Feelings, Music, Audible Voice, Other People, Visions, Dreams, etc.
I told each student to choose one of the ways the Spirit communicates and search for scripture verses or stories that demonstrate it. You could have them work in pairs, or by themselves. Give them 3-5 minutes to find scriptures, and then discuss their answers.
Videos
For the rest of the lesson, I shared the videos by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve where they talk about how each of them Hear Him. After each video, I asked the students how that person hears the Spirit. We were able to add a few more methods to the board.
This section will take about 45 minutes including all the videos and discussing each one. So, keep that in mind if you decide do it. We weren’t able to go through all the videos, but they still learned a lot.
This could make a great seminary lesson, youth Sunday lesson, or Family Home Evening.
