Are you or your kids going to Pioneer Trek this summer? If so, I’ve got the list for you! Here are the best pioneer trek essentials that you’ll need to survive the wilderness for several days, just like the pioneers 😉
This list is based on the allowed clothing for my stake. Since every stake is different, you might have different rules for what you can and can’t wear. Our rules were any button down, long sleeve shirt, skirts that were at least mid-calf length (for girls), long pants for boys, a brimmed hat or bonnet, and comfortable walking shoes. Optional clothing were things like aprons, suspenders, vests, etc.
But here you’ll find all the essentials, and plenty of non-essentials (but really nice to have)! Trust me, I’ve been on four pioneer treks and have taken my kids on two! Good luck!
For Women/Girls

This is the exact shirt that I wore last summer on pioneer trek. I really loved the vented back, it kept me cool and dry. The sleeves have convenient tabs to keep them rolled up as well. Plus, it comes in several different colors.

5 Gallon Buckets with Screw-on Lids
Most stakes use these buckets for storage as well as seats. We have found that the screw-on lids are a must! Much better than trying to pry them open.
If you’re going to be using the buckets as seats, these lids will come in handy and keep your bottom nice and happy!
Another idea would be to use this inflatable pillow on top of your bucket. This is what my family did, and it came in handy to use as our sleeping pillow as well. Plus, it packs up nice and small so it doesn’t take up much room at all!

I have hard 3 kids go on trek. I have a collection of clothing I share with people, bonnets, aprons, skirts, dresses, blouses, etc.
I showed the yw how to make a skirt from a sheet.
Always have the women’s and girls wear leggings under skirts to help with charging. Lemon eucalyptus oil is good as a tick and mosquito repellant. But use something.
I made cool bands for the stake leaders using fabric and the pellets you can find in the garden section. This was years ago before the fancy fabric ones came out.
One of my dearest friends and her husband serve as missionaries at the Deseret Land and livestock trek. Faith and Steve Wright!
I bought leggings for under my skirt.
