How to Organize Your Spice Cabinet

organize spice cabinet

I don’t know about you, but I was long overdue to organize my spice cabinet. It’s one of those things that seems like a huge chore to tackle, but once you start, it doesn’t take long at all. Even though this time did take a bit longer than normal, since I transferred every spice into a new aesthetic jar, I still got it done in one afternoon.

I’ve organized my spice cabinet several times, but this time I knew needed to be extra special. Instead of just organizing it, I wanted to have everything match as best I could. So now, not only is it organized, but it’s really pretty! Which makes it just that much more fun to cook. And who doesn’t love a good before and after picture? Let’s get started!

This is what my spice cabinet looked like before:

Basically just a hodge-podge of all our spices, plus some sauces, cooking oil, and a box of random cornmeal. One thing to note that might be unique about my spice cabinet is that I have my spices, and my husband (who loves to BBQ, smoke, etc.) has his spices. Mine are mostly on the bottom shelf, and his are taking up half of the middle shelf and some of the top shelf. But at the end of the day, there really wasn’t much rhyme or reason for that mess. So, here’s what I did to organize my spice cabinet.

  1. Take everything out. Clear your counter space and take everything out of that cupboard.
  2. Wipe it down. Wipe off those shelves, any bins you might have, and give everything a good cleaning.
  3. Toss out the old. Go through your spices, and toss anything that is expired, or that you simply don’t use.
  4. Organize into categories. Yours will be different from mine, but I separated my spices from my husband’s, and organized oils, sauces, and even type of spices (baking, Italian, salts, etc.)
  5. Transfer to new containers. This is optional, but I highly recommend it. I will share everything I used and where I got it below, or you can see it all right here.
  6. Adjust shelves. Every time I have organized my spice cabinet, I had to adjust the height of the shelves somewhat. Make sure to measure how tall everything will be including any lazy susan’s or tiered shelves.
  7. Arrange to fit your space. And remember to not overcrowd!
  8. Tweak until right. You may have to rearrange a few things until you get it just right, but when it is, you’ll know!

Supplies for Organizing Your Spice Cabinet

4 oz Spice Jars

These are the main jars I used. They come with at least 3 different label options, and don’t worry, every spice imaginable is included in the labels. It also comes with a little funnel so you can transfer your spices clean and easy.

8 oz Glass Spice Jars

Sometimes you need a little bigger jar for certain spices. These ones are perfect. I used them for baking soda, baking powder, cocoa, and cornstarch.

Oil Spray Bottle with Pourer

We love these oil bottles. You can either pour out the oil, or spray it on. They come in different colors. We use black for olive oil, green for avocado oil, and white for canola oil.

3-Tier Spice Organizer

This is so functional so you can organize and see all of your spices easily. It has a non-stick grip too, so those glass jars stay in place.

10-Inch Lazy Susan Set of 4

These will come in handy guaranteed! They are the perfect size to put a couple on a shelf. And they make being able to reach everything so much easier!

2-Tier Turntable

I bought a couple of these not knowing if I would use them for sure. They didn’t really fit in my spice cabinet, but I did end up using them in my pantry.

25 oz Storage Jars

I bought these for my pantry to store bigger things like chocolate chips, nuts, and anything else that might come up. They match perfectly with everything else and will come in handy more I’m sure.

And finally, here’s the “after” pic:

Clean, organized, and my husband has his own shelf for all of his BBQ things. It makes me so happy!
