If you’re a Millennial or older, I’m going to go ahead and guess that you were taught (either directly or indirectly) that you shouldn’t talk about the temple. Like, ever. Maybe you understood why, and maybe you didn’t. For me, I wasn’t exactly clear on what I could discuss, so I just never did. Fortunately, in recent years the prophet and other church leaders have not only discussed the temple more openly, but they’ve encouraged us to as well. Upon further research, I discovered that there’s really not a whole lot about the temple that we can’t discuss.
So, what can you discuss outside of the temple, and what should you leave behind closed doors?
Official Church publications. Anything that has been covered by Church leaders or presented in official Church publications is okay to discuss outside of the temple.
Covenants made in the endowment: The law of obedience, law of sacrifice, law of the gospel, law of chastity, and law of consecration are all okay to discuss outside of the temple.
The temple garment. Yes, we can even discuss the garment of the holy priesthood. Just remember that we should talk about all of these things with reverence and respect.
What not to discuss. In the endowment, we are asked not to repeat some of the wording used in the ordinances outside of the temple. These things are specifically mentioned to keep sacred.
Like I said, we can actually discuss a lot more outside the temple than you might think. Be sure to follow the Spirit, but also beware of past traditions. We shouldn’t be afraid to talk about the temple just because we have never talked about the temple.
Building, visiting, and talking about the temple lessens Satan’s power on the earth. So, let’s talk about the temple!
