If you’ve ever gotten excited about improving your scripture study, then got overwhelmed by all the things… you’re not alone. There are so many tools and resources out there claiming to “transform your scripture study,” but not all of them are worth your hard-earned money.
I’ve tested a lot of products over the years. Some have genuinely enhanced my study, and others were just expensive clutter. If you’re looking to invest in tools that actually help you focus, feel the Spirit, and deepen your understanding, here’s what’s worth the splurge and what isn’t.

✅ 5 Things Worth Spending Money On
Wide-Margin Scriptures
This is hands-down the best investment I’ve made in my study. Wide-margin scriptures give you space to write impressions, cross-reference verses, and even sketch doctrinal diagrams. They’ve helped me slow down and interact with the text in a much deeper way. If you want your scriptures to feel personal and alive, this is where to start.
Highlighters That Don’t Bleed Through
Please don’t sabotage your beautiful pages with cheap highlighters. I use or scripture-safe highlighters that don’t bleed or smear. Color-coding has helped me recognize patterns and themes across verses, and it makes my study feel a little more joyful.
A Good Journal
I’ve tried to make scripture journaling work in dozens of random notebooks, but having one journal dedicated only to spiritual impressions makes a difference. I look for one with thick paper, a lay-flat spine, and a structure that allows me to track insights, questions, and promptings.
The Book of Mormon Made Easier Set by David Ridges
If you’ve ever read a verse and thought, “Wait—what did I just read?” this set is for you. David Ridges breaks down difficult verses with explanations in between, and it doesn’t water down the doctrine. It’s especially helpful if you’re just getting into serious scripture study or want to teach your teens or friends.
A Lap Desk (for Studying in Bed)
Some of my best scripture study happens early in the morning or late at night right in my bed. A lap desk makes it feel more intentional and keeps my materials organized (and off the blankets). It’s a small purchase that’s made a big difference in my consistency.
❌ 5 Things Not Worth Spending Money On
1. Aesthetic-Only Scriptures
Yes, they’re beautiful. But without the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, or the restored context, you’re getting a very different study experience. Stick to scriptures that support your testimony of the Restoration.
2. Dozens of Unused Journals
Trust me on this. You don’t need ten half-used journals with different styles and colors. One or two high-quality, consistent ones will serve you far better than a stack of pretty-but-forgotten notebooks.
3. Expensive Study Apps That Duplicate Gospel Library
The Church’s Gospel Library app is robust, free, and constantly improving. Most paid apps offer things you can already get like cross-references, audio, and tagging – for free in Gospel Library.
4. Subscription Boxes with More Decor Than Doctrine
They’re fun, but they can easily become spiritual clutter. If the main feature is a bookmark, a tote, and a cookie cutter instead of meaningful study tools or doctrinal insights, your money might be better spent elsewhere.
5. Over-the-Top Study Accessories (like scripture-themed mugs, pens, pillows, etc.)
These things make cute gifts, but they won’t help you feel the Spirit more. When your study space starts looking like a boutique instead of a sacred place, it’s time to simplify.
At the end of the day, no product can replace the Spirit. But the right tools can help you invite Him in more intentionally. Before buying something new, ask: Will this help me connect with the Lord more deeply? If the answer is yes, then it’s probably worth it.
