To Those Who Serve in the Shadows: God Sees You

Have you ever felt like you’re serving in the shadows? In every ward or branch, there are a few people who seem to do it all. The bishopric, Relief Society presidency, stake leaders, the ones at the pulpit and in the pictures. And then, there are the others. The quiet ones. The consistent ones. The ones who have been attending for decades and have never had a “big calling.” The ones who slip in early to set up chairs or stay late to stack them. The ones who aren’t leading councils but are quietly leading lives of discipleship.

This post is for you.

serving in the shadows

In a culture where leadership often gets the spotlight, it’s easy to feel like value is tied to visibility. But God’s Kingdom doesn’t run on the world’s model. In His eyes, success isn’t measured by titles or callings. It’s measured by devotion. Obedience. Steadiness.

Elder Uchtdorf once said, “God does not need people who are flawless. He will take your talents and abilities and multiply them.” That kind of discipleship doesn’t only happen behind a pulpit. More often, it happens in the nursery, in the kitchen, in quiet conversations in the hallway. It happens when someone shows up without being asked. When someone watches a single mom’s kids during sacrament. When someone notices who isn’t there and sends a message that says, “You matter.”

We sometimes assume leadership callings are a sign of righteousness or spiritual maturity. But scripture and experience teach a different truth. Alma was a prophet, but Amulek was the one who opened his home. Nephi led a nation, but Sam quietly supported him. The Book of Mormon is full of unnamed people like ministers, helpers, and servants whose faith changed the course of history. And we’re told in 3 Nephi 27:27 that we should “judge what is righteous.” That’s not based on the calling we hold, but the life we live.

To those who feel overlooked: God sees you. He sees the way you sit with the class member who talks too much. He sees the monthly visits you never miss. He sees the way you bite your tongue when the ward council doesn’t take your idea seriously. He sees your offering envelope. He sees your tears when you wish you could do more but feel invisible.

And He remembers.

In Doctrine and Covenants 58:27 we’re told, “Men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will.” Some of the best people I know don’t wait for a calling to serve. They don’t need a title to care. They aren’t motivated by recognition. They’re motivated by covenant.

So if you’re one of those who serve in the shadows, thank you. Your work may not come with applause, but it carries eternal weight. God’s Kingdom doesn’t just need bishops and stake presidents. It needs disciples. And disciples do what needs doing, whether anyone’s watching or not.

Keep showing up. Keep loving. Keep quietly changing lives.

Because the One who matters most sees everything. And He never forgets.
