5 Books That Helped Me Manage My Anxiety

anxiety books

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by anxiety, intrusive self-doubt, or the weight of expectations (spiritual or otherwise) you’re not alone. I’ve found that while therapy and professional tools are incredibly valuable (and sometimes necessary), some of the most powerful comfort and clarity have come through gospel-centered books that gently but boldly realign my heart with Christ.

Here are five books that have helped me quiet my fears, find peace in uncertainty, and remember who really carries the load.

Founder of Our Peace by John H. Hilton III

This book changed how I understood peace – not as the absence of trials, but the presence of Christ in them. Drawing from scripture and lived experiences, Hilton shows how we can anchor ourselves in the Savior, who is not just a peaceful teacher, but the actual Founder of our peace. One of my favorite takeaways is that peace isn’t earned by doing everything perfectly, it’s given when we turn to Him, even imperfectly.

Believing Christ by Stephen E. Robinson

For years, I believed in Christ without fully believing Him, especially when He said His grace was sufficient. This book gently confronts perfectionism and spiritual anxiety with beautiful doctrinal clarity. Robinson makes the Atonement personal and powerful, helping readers understand that we don’t have to save ourselves. We just have to let Him.

After All We Can Do by Dieter F. Uchtdorf

This book is a loving correction to the idea that salvation is something we earn. Elder Uchtdorf invites us to embrace a Christ-centered life that is full of joy, not fear. He teaches that “after all we can do” doesn’t mean “because of all we did.” It means we come to Christ, do what we can, and trust Him with the rest. For someone with anxiety? That’s everything.

The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins

This one isn’t a gospel book, but the mindset shift was so impactful I had to include it. Mel Robbins teaches that when people do things you don’t like, let them. Let them talk. Let them misunderstand. Let them leave. Trying to control everything and everyone feeds anxiety. Letting go? It brings peace. And when I apply this with a gospel lens, it reminds me that agency is God’s gift, not a flaw in the plan.

The Book of Mormon

No surprise here. This isn’t just a spiritual checklist, it’s my lifeline. In anxious seasons, I turn to the Book of Mormon not just for answers, but for presence. The Spirit that accompanies it is healing. Scriptures like Alma 7:11–12 and Mosiah 24:14 have reminded me over and over that Christ didn’t just suffer for me, He suffers with me.

Anxiety doesn’t disappear with one prayer or one book. But over time, and with intention, these books have helped reshape how I see my anxiety: not as evidence of spiritual failure, but as an invitation to trust Jesus deeper. If you’re in the thick of it, know this: you’re not broken, and you’re not alone. Keep going. Keep turning to Him.

Have you read any of these? I’d love to know what books have helped you in anxious seasons. Drop them in the comments or share this post with someone who might need it.

  1. Believing Christ was life changing for me as a young mom. I didn’t realize that I was trying to save myself when Christ had already done that. I just needed to trust him and Beleive Him.
