5 AI Prompts to Elevate Your Scripture Study

scripture study

I don’t know about you, but sometimes my scripture study feels a little too routine. I sit down with good intentions, but distractions creep in or I end up reading without really feeling. As a Latter-day Saint woman trying to juggle motherhood, callings, and content creation, I’ve been looking for ways to make my study more personal, more revelatory, and, let’s be honest, more efficient.

Enter: AI.

Now hear me out. When used with purpose and discernment, AI can be a powerful tool, not a replacement for the Spirit. It doesn’t receive revelation, but it can absolutely help me prepare to receive it.

Here are five AI prompts I’ve started using that have completely elevated my scripture study. And they just might do the same for you.

1. “Summarize [chapter] and show me its main themes, symbolism, and how it applies to my life today.”

Sometimes I get stuck in the weeds of scripture language. This prompt helps me pull back and see the forest and the trees. For example, I asked it to summarize Mosiah 18 and it helped me see the covenantal structure more clearly, especially in light of my baptismal covenants.

I use this wide-margin Book of Mormon with room to write my thoughts and impressions.

2. “Compare this scripture with teachings from modern prophets or General Conference talks.”

This one is GOLD. You can drop in a verse (like Ether 12:27) and ask for recent prophetic commentary or talks that echo its message. It’s like having a topical guide and General Conference library all in one. Great for lesson prep or personal pondering.

Here’s a digital wide-margin version of the April 2025 General Conference for personal study.

3. “Ask me five reflective questions based on [scripture/chapter/topic] to deepen my understanding and application.”

I love this prompt when I’m journaling. It helps me move from consuming scripture to actually connecting with it. Questions like “How have I seen the Lord make weak things strong?” open up space for the Spirit to teach me personally.

These are my absolute favorite no-bleed scripture markers.

4. “Create a family home evening or Come, Follow Me lesson based on this chapter, including object lessons or activities for teens/kids.”

Yes, please! This is the hack I wish I had when my kids were younger, but it still works with teens. I’ve used this for last-minute Sunday prep and honestly, it’s better than anything I would’ve come up with on my own. You can even ask it to match the lesson to your family’s current challenges.

5. “Explain this scripture like I’m a brand-new convert, with cultural context and modern examples.”

This is super helpful when you’re trying to teach others or just want a fresh lens. You could also use this prompt to prepare for Relief Society lessons, social media posts, and even just to simplify your own understanding.

The scriptures are living. The Spirit is the teacher. And AI? It’s just a study companion. When used intentionally, it can clear mental clutter and help us tune in to what really matters. So go ahead – open your scriptures, open your heart, and invite AI to assist, not replace, the revelation process.

Let’s flood our study with light…and maybe even a little bit of tech.

  1. Do you find that ChatGPT makes things up? I used it a few months ago to find conference quotes on a specific topic and it created quotes and references. A few weeks later I used it to study D&C 109. Again, it made up things that went in the section.

  2. I heard from a friend to ask AI to create a study guide for you with your Patriarchal Blessing if you are willing to input it.
