Every disciple of Jesus Christ will, at some point, wrestle with tough gospel questions. These questions may arise from scripture study, church history, personal trials, or even cultural pressures. Asking questions is not a sign of weak faith. It’s evidence of a seeking soul. The real challenge lies in where we turn for answers.
In our digital world, it’s easier than ever to type a question into a search bar or scroll through Instagram or TikTok hoping someone with a confident voice will have the solution. But we must pause and remember: just because someone has a lot of followers does not mean they carry spiritual authority.

Followers Don’t Equal Authority
Many influencers in and out of the Church claim to offer “truth” about doctrine, history, or policy. They may be articulate, persuasive, and even well-intentioned. But popularity is not the same as priesthood authority. In fact, the Savior warned against being “tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine” (Ephesians 4:14). The danger of mistaking social credibility for divine authority is real, and it can lead us away from the source of truth.
If your testimony or peace of mind depends solely on the opinions of those who trend online, your spiritual foundation may feel fragile. The Lord’s plan has always centered on prophets, scriptures, and personal revelation, not algorithms or viral content.
The True Sources of Answers
So, where do we turn when faced with tough gospel questions? The Lord has provided multiple trustworthy sources:
-
The Scriptures – Ancient prophets recorded truths inspired by God. When we sincerely search the scriptures, the Holy Ghost can open our understanding and reveal principles that apply directly to our questions.
-
Living Prophets and Apostles – The Lord declared, “Whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same” (Doctrine and Covenants 1:38). General Conference messages, official Church publications, and teachings from authorized leaders are reliable channels of truth.
-
The Holy Ghost – Perhaps the most personal source of answers, the Spirit testifies of truth and brings peace to the sincere seeker. Prayer, pondering, and spiritual receptivity create the environment where the Holy Ghost can whisper answers that no influencer could ever provide.
-
Trusted Church Resources – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides tools like Gospel Library, Saints volumes, and official essays on gospel topics. These resources are created with accuracy, transparency, and the guidance of prophets and apostles.
Wrestling with Questions in Faith
It’s normal if answers don’t come immediately. Jacob in the Book of Mormon spoke of “wrestling” before God (Enos 1:2), and Joseph Smith himself lived with questions before receiving revelation. In the process of patient seeking, our faith deepens. Sometimes the Lord grants direct answers. Other times, He gives peace and strength to carry unanswered questions with trust until the right time.
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf once said: “Doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith.” That doesn’t mean we should ignore our doubts, it means we should root our pursuit of answers in faith, not fear.
Building on the Rock
When we base our answers on revelation from God, we are building on the rock of Christ rather than the shifting sands of trending voices. The Savior Himself promised, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find” (Matthew 7:7). He did not say, “Scroll, and it shall be given you.”
Influencers can provide insights, perspectives, or personal experiences. But when it comes to tough gospel questions, only God and His authorized servants can provide eternal, unshakable truth.
If you’re struggling with tough gospel questions today, don’t panic and don’t walk away. Take them to the scriptures. Take them to your knees. Take them to General Conference talks and Church resources. And most importantly, take them to the Lord. He is not threatened by your questions. He is eager to guide you into truth and peace.
As you trust the true sources of authority, you will discover that tough gospel questions can actually become stepping stones to a deeper, more resilient testimony of Jesus Christ.
