Marriage Unmasked: Brooke Stone of Mercy River

marriage

I am so excited to start a brand new series called Unmasked.  Every few weeks or so, I will be interviewing someone on their personal relationship with either marriage or motherhood.  Today we are lucky enough to hear from Brooke Stone of Mercy River Music.

Mercy River travels all over the United States and Canada as a highly sought after ensemble, performing for thousands of people while testifying of the Savior.  Check out their Christmas album All Is Bright today!

Brooke was sweet enough to answer a few personal questions about her marriage, so let’s get right to it!

1. How do you keep your marriage happy?

Date night date night date night. Not the most exciting answer, but we learned early in our marriage that forgoing this little weekly tradition was detrimental to our relationship. Also, I think it’s important to understand that marriage isn’t constant bliss. So when a disagreement or irritation comes, we don’t act like it’s the end of the world. (Or our marriage.) We deal with it, talk it through, and move on.

2. What is a unique tradition you have with your husband?

One of my favorite traditions with my husband is “Board Game Sunday”. On Sunday nights, after the kids are in bed, we grab a bag of snacks and a board game and play. We’re not always consistent with it but I’m always surprised at how much it blesses us when we do play.

3. What is something you struggle with as a wife?

TIME. My schedule is absolute chaos 90% of the time, but my husband’s love language is quality time. Hence the date nights. It’s not always convenient, but for us it’s necessary. It’s like exercise. I don’t always want to go out, but when i do I’m so glad we did!

4. What encouragement or advice do you have for others dealing with the same thing?

You have the time to date your spouse, just look for it. Whatever obstacle you have from keeping you being with your husband, find a way around it. Your kids will be fine without you one night a week. A happy marriage is the best gift you can give your kids, so get out and date!

5. Why is marriage important to you?

My husband is my complete opposite and it has been the biggest blessing. He calms my crazy side, he makes me think differently. He helps me reflect on how I can do better, and he’s my greatest support. I am 100% a better person because of him.
